Joining a group trip solo: an honest account

Who else books alone, how rooming actually works, and what the first evening is really like. About a third of every batch travels solo.
Every week someone messages us the same sentence: "I want to come, but I'd be coming alone — is that weird?"
It is not weird. It is the norm.
Who is actually on the bus
On a typical weekend batch of 24 people:
- 7 or 8 are solo travellers
- 6 to 10 are pairs of friends
- 2 or 3 are couples
- The rest are small groups of three or four
The solo travellers almost always find each other by the first chai stop. The pairs are usually happy to absorb one more person. Nobody is doing this for the first time except the people doing it for the first time — which is most of them.
How rooming works
You are matched with a same-gender traveller from the same batch, at no extra cost. You are not asked to share a bed, and you are not put in a dorm.
If you would rather not share at all, a private room is available on every trip for a supplement. Ask at the time of booking — retro-fitting it two days before departure is much harder.
The group opens a week early
Roughly seven days before departure we open a WhatsApp group with everyone on your batch and your trip captain. By the time you reach the boarding point you will have seen names, faces and at least one argument about the playlist.
This is the part that does the heavy lifting. Almost nobody arrives as a stranger.
What the first evening is like
Honestly? A bit awkward for about forty minutes, and then not. There is usually a bonfire, someone has brought a speaker, and the captain does a round of introductions that everyone pretends to find cringe and then enjoys.
By day two you will be taking photographs for people whose surnames you do not know. That is the whole point.
One piece of advice
Say yes to the optional thing. The pre-dawn viewpoint, the extra hike, the detour for a specific plate of food. The people who come back with the reunion group chat are always the ones who said yes.
