Kashmir with your parents: a planning guide

ThrillHikers trip desk·2 min read·kashmir · family · seniors

Which valleys need walking, which don't, where the lifts are, and how to build a week that works for three generations at once.

Kashmir is the easiest Himalayan holiday to do with parents, because almost all of the beauty is roadside. You do not earn the view here — you park next to it.

The four blocks worth building around

  1. 1Dal Lake, Srinagar — a night on a cedar houseboat. Boarding is a single step from the shikara. Breakfast comes to the room.
  2. 2Gulmarg — the gondola does the climbing. Phase 1 is gentle and paved at both ends; Phase 2 goes to 3,980 m and is worth skipping if anyone has a heart condition.
  3. 3Pahalgam — Betaab and Aru valleys are drive-in. Ponies are optional and, frankly, usually not worth the negotiation.
  4. 4Doodhpathri — the one most operators skip. Meadows, a stream, a picnic. No walking required.

Things that actually matter

  • Ask for ground-floor rooms. Many Srinagar hotels and almost all houseboats have no lift. We flag this on every family booking.
  • Keep drives under three hours. Srinagar to Pahalgam is about two and a half; Srinagar to Gulmarg under two. It is entirely doable at a gentle pace.
  • Build in a nothing day. The Mughal gardens on a slow afternoon beat a fourth valley.
  • Kahwa is your friend. It gets everyone through the cold better than coffee does.
If wheelchair or walker assistance is needed at the airport, tell us at booking. We arrange it with the airline directly and it costs nothing.

What to skip

Sonmarg in a single day from Srinagar. It is a long drive for a short stop, and the last stretch to Thajiwas glacier is a pony ride or a walk on loose ground. Lovely for a fit group; a hard sell with grandparents.

Amarnath-season dates, unless that is why you are going. The valley is at its busiest and the road discipline suffers.

A week that works

Day 1 houseboat · Day 2 Gulmarg · Day 3 Srinagar gardens and old city · Day 4 to Pahalgam · Day 5 Pahalgam valleys · Day 6 Doodhpathri · Day 7 fly home.

Six nights, nothing rushed, and everybody from eight to eighty ends the week still speaking to each other.
